Death to 2020 - Review

"They said there were more mail ballots than ever, what about female ballots?"

Director: Al Campbell, Alice Mathias

Where Available: Netflix

Rating:

On January 2nd, it took my parents and me quite a while to choose what movie we wanted to watch. I wanted my first watch of 2020 to be worth it. What could be a more perfect way to start a new year than to watch a documentary-style Netflix comedy special by Black Mirror about everything that went wrong in 2020?

There is not much to say about this special other than it is entertaining. The film is scripted like a documentary. The “crew” interviews our actors, who portray characters like Kathy Flowers and Duke Goolies. Each character answers questions about the events that occurred in 2020 if they were actually interviewed for a serious documentary. I thought this was such a unique take on how to make entertainment out of the absolute shit-show that was 2020. (Unique in a good way) I can’t imagine how a serious documentary about 2020 would even start. I have no doubt that there are already documentaries in the works trying to capture the full essence of the last year that will, for sure, be labeled as “too soon” and “ insensitive.” (Exactly like the recent Michael Bay movie “Songbird” that came out just a month ago.) Making serious, factual documentaries about Covid-19 or movies portraying the Dystopian future of the world after Covid while we are still going through it is not the best use of our time. However, Black Mirror did a great job of putting out a quick summary of the year in a comedic way.

I gave this a ⅗ stars because yes, it was funny, but the speed they put it out takes away from the production quality. The script, however, was GOLDEN! I was a little worried initially because some of the reviews were saying that all the jokes were shallow. In the case of Death to 2020, the jokes were PERFECTLY WRITTEN and made me and my parents laugh A LOT.

Out of all the Black Mirror content that I have watched, Death to 2020 seems to stray most from their usual content. 2020 in itself was a Black Mirror episode that is bleeding over into the year 2021. From the few most popular black mirror episodes and the interactive Bandersnatch movie, all their content is quite depressing. It was a jump for them to go from that to a comedic documentary, but I am not complaining!

If you are looking for something quick to watch that will make you laugh at how stupid humans are sometimes and is stacked with a hilarious cast, then add Death to 2020 to your Netflix list. Let me know if you think it was “too soon” or just right. I wonder if Black Mirror made a deal with Netflix to do something like this for all the years to come. I think it would be fun to have a documentary-style comedy movie summarizing every year in about an hour and a half. I would definitely watch that!
